Shijian-31 vs. the Mission Robotic Vehicle: Two Ways to Own GEO
China’s Shijian-31 is sweeping the entire geostationary belt from a 12.5-hour Molniya orbit, shifting its viewing longitude 15.7 degrees each pass and re-scanning the whole belt in roughly 23 days. Five weeks later, Northrop Grumman’s Mission Robotic Vehicle launched carrying DARPA’s RSGS robotic arms on a 10-month electric-propulsion climb to GEO. One power is building the ability to see everything in the belt. The other is building the ability to touch it.
